New Jersey Sales Tax Holiday Coming Soon

From August 26 to September 4, 2023, the State of New Jersey will be holding a Sales Tax Holiday on certain items sold to individual purchasers for non-business use. The tax holiday will waive the 6.625% sales tax on a long list of eligible items, many of which are needed by parents and children for the upcoming school year.
The following items are eligible for the sales tax waiver:
- Computers with a sales price of less than $3,000
- School art supplies, including, but not limited to, clay/glazes, paints, paintbrushes, watercolors, and sketch/drawing pads
- School computer supplies with a sales price of less than $1,000, including computer storage media, electronic schedulers and personal digital assistants (except cell phones), printers, and printer supplies such as paper and ink
- School instructional materials, such as reference books, workbooks, maps and globes, and textbooks
- School supplies, including, but not limited to, binders, folders, index cards, pencil boxes, pens, protractors, book bags, crayons, glue, markers, lunch boxes, notebooks, pencils, calculators, erasers, highlighters, paper (loose leaf, graph, tracing, colored, construction), rulers, and scissors
- Sport/recreational equipment, such as ballet shoes, goggles, mouth guards, skates, shin guards, shoulder pads, ski boots, cleats, life preservers/vests, gloves, wetsuits, and helmets
Clothing and shoes are already exempt from sales tax. There is no limit on how many items an individual customer may purchase during the holiday. Although the sales tax holiday was established to help families save money on costly school supplies, the savings are not limited to just students and parents; anyone may take advantage of the holiday.
