Staffing, Training & Security
As the managing partner of the 36-employee accounting and advisory firm Klatzkin, Thomas Martin spends a lot of time on client-related matters, but he’s also focused on staffing and other issues. “We are always on top of finding and retaining qualified staff,” Martin said. “Several partners and staff are a few years away from retirement age, and we want to identify candidates early on.”
Tax returns are just the beginning
He’s not alone in that concern, not by a long shot. In fact, staffing is a top concern for just about every CPA firm, regardless of size, according to a survey released this summer by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Besides offering competitive pay and benefits, and adopting a business-casual environment — except for most client engagements — the firm works hard at providing a welcoming environment, he added. “We try to hire people right out of college, so we can train them to our standards and culture,” said Martin. “Towards that end, we have internship programs through TCNJ and Rider University.”
